The 19th Century French Sculpture Before Rodin
At Rodin Wing
Japanese

French paintings of the 19th century had begun with confrontation of Neo-Classism representing David and Engres, and Romanticism representing Gericault and Delacroix. Later it developed into Barbizon school, Realism, and Impressionism, but it was essentially only Rodin who won an equal reputation with the painters of this age.
The 19th century French sculptures before Rodin were not as innovative as the paintings. Rodin also got ideas from traditional style as Classism, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. However, there were some other talented sculptors in this age, although they were not as good as Rodin. Barye, a friend of Delecroix, found the expression of powere from the fighting animals that attracted painters of the Romanticism.
Fremiet, a nephew of the representative Romanticism sculptor Rude, expressed exotic theme with realistic style based on his practical knowledge of anatomy.
Carpeaux, who basically followed the style of Rude combined refined style of Neo-Classism and movement of Romanticism to abolish fixed conceptof academism. Carier=Belleuse, who studied the traditional 18th century French sculpture, had givern a great influence on Rodin in 1870s with Teracotta sculpture which consists of different figures from mythology. Dalou, a friend of Rodin, won a high reputation in England and France with his friendly work of art to the public.
