SOUTHEAST ASIA-Birth of Modern Art

In the 19th century, most of the countries in the region were under clolonial rules.
After the arrival of the new century,people began cravimg for more freedom,as many nations had become independent.
This movement,of course,had a great influence on the development of paintings of this period.
Following schools had played major roles during this period; 13 Moderns in Manila, Pursagi in Java, Bitahama of Bali, Chinese Art school in Singapore, Indochina Art school of Hanoi, and Sirabacorn Art school in Bangkok.

At the same time,new trend in creative art expression which had abolished the old style became extremely popular and the trend gradually dominate the art style of the age.
At our exhibition,150 pieces of collection from Phlippines, Vietnam, Malaysia,Singapore Indonesia and Thai show how the modern art ininthe region,emerged and developded throughout the 20th century as they,at the sametime, experienced WWII and many independend wars.
