Deutsche Malerei im Zeitalter der Romantik
German Romantic Painting Exhibition

German culture was at its golden age from themid-18th century through mid-19th century. Poemsof Goethe and Schiller, music of Beethoven and Schubert, and philosophy of Kant and Hegel are still appreciated as the most valuable cultural inheritance in Europe. The field of art also develeped abundantly during this period.
Likewise France, which experienced the great Revolution and the Napoleon War, the influence of the Neo-classicism also entered Germany. In the field of painting, many classic landscape were painted that had great influence from Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain of the 17th century. On the otherhand, new movement of Romanticism evolved in the beginning of the 19thcentury.
Caspar David Friedrich created mysterious pictures by observing ocean and fields at dusk and dawn with heart of deep religious faith. One of his pieces at our exhibition, "Lebensstufen" is one of his representative art works of his latter days. Meanwhile, painters ofschool of Nazarene who idealized early Renaissance paintings, established new style of religious paintings in Rome.
At our exhibition, we display 73 selected pieces from Wallraf-Richartz-Museum Kolen and Museum der bildenden Kunste Leipzig and 20 worksof rough sketches and prints. There are land- scapes, religious paintings, historical paintingsportraits and public paintings.
Our first major German painting exhibition would be a perfect opportunity to feel the spirit of talented German painters.
